Jelly fish?/body parts

Experimenting with water, oil, and off camera flash using jells. It looks like a lot of the jelly fish we saw this weekend at the cabin. Flash was set at 1/16 power 3 feet from pyrex cake pan with about an inch or so of water, with teaspoon ful or so of oil. I took 20 shots and stirred the water around with a fork every few shots to create the bubbles.

Sour Cream

Charlie seems to love sour cream. An interesting taste bud for a toddler. I remember as a kid I did not like the taste of such a sour flavor. As adults most of us like it a bit too much. He chased us all out of the dip bowl as he was double, triple, 100 diple times with same chip. A very sunny day at the beach. It would be nice to stay a few days longer but work drags us down to Seattle tomorrow.

Summer suds

Another nice day...is this like 5 days in a row now? Summer has come early :) Got off work early only because of a fire in the building I was in so they sent us home 30 min early only for me to lock my keys in the car. I came home and poured a cold one...well not really a cold one but a fine wine, merlot to boot. Mom and daughter must be out shopping? I am home alone.

Negative space

How many daddy's does it take to change a light bulb? My daughter needed light to read us her book at the kitchen table tonight. She can read a bit at the young age of 4 and mom continues to work with her on this. My role is to bring on the light. I changed out the florescent and gave them the light needed to continue the reading.

night moves

Can you find the animal in this shot? He/she went scooting across our deck and I ran out with the camera to see if I could capture this critter on film, err digital film. I was hoping to try and get the shot I was looking for yesterday but looking at this shot you can tell the clouds have rolled in.

Timed exposure

Taken at about 10pm. Not what I was hoping for and will try this when I have more time. I set my canera at f8 ISO200 on Blub. 20 min exposure but in the 20 min time frame I popped a flash, twice hence why you see me two times. But it was way over exposed and had to drop the exposure down all the way to even see me in the frame. Here is my try at this. I will revisit this later in the year. Thoughts for improvement?

Got lemonade?

Left alone to man the store the temptation to taste the product was just too great. Boy did it hit the spot though and she helped herself to a 2nd cup of good ol fashion lemonade. This was her first taste of work, no pun intended. She was joined by her cousin Payne and they made a whopping 2.75 cents. They split the money in half. My daughter, not knowing the value of money wanted the coins and gave her cousin the dollar bills. Payne was more than happy to take the bills and run. Uncle Dave stepped in and redistributed the money to make it an even 1.50 split after throwing in a quarter himself.

Theme Bike

This is a more powered by gas bike. I was down in Portland, Oregon today and we walked right by this bike shop. I had to take my camera out and take a shot. Here is the result. Chalked full of power.

Fountain

I did not have time tonight to do much but I did think this was an interesting contrast of light. Talking about light, I am headed to Portland tomrrow for a Scott Kelby Lightroom workshop. 2 employees and I are jumping in the car and headed down at o'dark thirty. Next month Ben Willmore is in Seattle on June 12 to talk about photography and photoshop. If you are interested in joining me, tomorrow is the last day to sign up for a discount. NAPP (National Association of Professional Photographers) is putting on the workshops.

Remember when

Remember when we use to have to get out of our seat to turn the channel? We have come a long way since the early 70's when the first remotes came out. They were loud and clunky. Now they can darn near fly the space shuttle.

May 18th...Father Frank

No that is not Jimmy Stewart, although this man was as handsome as JS. He is my late father-in-law. He passed away 4 years ago today. A giant of a man in heart at least, but a gentle giant.

Here's to you Finney.

The last of my reflections shot along with Reflecting on old photo's I have taken this shot of the marina in the past and thought it was a good time to revisit the shot. Taken early in the morning in "that golden hour" of photography.

60th Birthday

They call our department the west wing mostly due to location, as we are on the west end of town. I bet you can guess who's birthday it is? Our boss turned the big 6-0 today. We all wore black in honor of the big day. I hope I am in half as good a shape as him in 10 years, or for that matter in 10 days. Great boss, great lunch in front of the lobster shop on the waterfront in downtown Tacoma.

Interesting outfit

My daughter has gotten to the age she wants to dress herself. Luckily this was only a dress up outfit and not one she wanted to wear for the entire day. Grandma gave her the scarf and she loves it.

TOSCANOS

REFLECTION
This is a very elegant restaurant and a sense of romance and old school rolled into one. My co-worker is part owner in this endeavor and I will be helping her with images to update her website. I believe she is in the process of updating her already fabulous web site. I am excited to do my part in adding the image gallery and doing any Photoshop work she might need. I am doing my home work and playing with light and angles. I have some ideas in mind and her place will work nicely for some great shots. Here is my homemade shot for now.

The McIlhenney CO.

Tabasco has been around since 1868 My wife went to Costco today and they give you the big heavy duty boxes that take what seems like 15 min per box to break down and put in the recycle bin. So I took advantage of the box and used it as a lightbox for my favorite Costco product. Did I take a picture of this earlier in the year? I forget, but I use this like my daughter uses Ketchup. Here is the setup. I used my pentax 540 for backlighting. The holes in the bottom of the box were about the size of quarters and there were 4 holes, one in each corner. My bee like light is camera right about 4 feet from box. There were 2 rather large slits in the box that the bee could shoot through. comments welcome on the lighting.

Mt. Saint Helens

Extreme color--This weeks category was Eric's call. A good topic I might add. Eric I hope to see you in a few hours and we can talk shop?
We are at the cabin this weekend and I did a quick sweep of the layout, and one thing led to another and a story came of of it all.
I call it the Volcano Party but my sister-in-law who organizes it and has been to 28 of the now 29th party calls it Mt Saint Helen's after the big volcano eruption that took place May 18th 1980. It's a real important date inside the family now. We have the party at our family cabin which is where Mary, my wife Sheila and a few college friends were at the time of the eruption. Later, sometime in the mid 80's Frank (my father-in-law) moved into the cabin. He lived here for about 10 years. He has since passed. His passing was on, you guessed it May 18th, and 2005. We had just celebrated the 25th anniversary and on the way home from the cabin we got a phone call. It was Sunday May 15th and we were told Frank was not doing well and had entered the hospital. He passed the following Wed, the day my daughter got her first tooth. This is not meant to be a downer post, but just a reflection of sorts. Frank was the most sincere man I have ever met. A real man of honor and integrity. A great Father, husband, grandfather, father-in-law and friend. We now tip our glass to him every May 18th.

So with that said, lets line up the glasses and make a toast, Here is to you father FRANK.

Fill the frame

A technique I learned early in life. Fill the frame. Don't be afraid to get close. move the feet or use a telie. My daughter has grown out of this bike and into a bigger one. Maybe this summer the training wheels come off?

Potato bug

These Slinky's always reminded me of potato bugs. This is my daughters 2nd round at the marvelous invention. That was the trouble with these when I was a kid as well. Once they get tangled, they are not good for anything, not even a door stop.

Flower week

I Created a tutorial for my teachers on this shot. A sharp mask in CS4 but can be done in all the photoshop versions. PS elements, not so much :( Again it rained like crazy today and got out and took a few shots on the back deck. Here was the shot I chose. Tim it is a quicktime so you should be able to view it on your mac. Do you have bootcamp on your machines?

Late rain

Showers and wind in the late afternoon, and early evening today. I stepped outside for a quick shot of our flowers. We just can't get a string of nice weather this spring. We get back to back days but then the wind and rain hits. A strange 6 month weather pattern in the Pacific Northwest this winter/spring season.

Wanna play some futball

Wanted to find a basketball but my garage is a bit cluttered right now so I grabbed my Hardy Nickerson signed football that I have stored in my den. My older brother gave this to me as a gift about 10 years ago. It has never been thrown or kicked, it just sits lonely in my den next to my signed batting helmet (picture for another day) In fact I am not sure if it's ever been photographed. I used my 540 speed light with my home made snoot. Here is my video of how I made my home made snoot and would love feedback on the tutorial and how I could improve it. Enjoy and have a great Cinco De Mayo tomorrow.

Ballet

This dress is a bit small for my daughter. She wore it for Santa Baby. If you have 3 min. it is well worth the watch. She is the first one on stage and the one that blows the kiss at the end. And here is the encore. If you look closely you will see the theme of her bathroom is Ballet.

Co-Workers

Well, since I don't work on the weekends I figured I would get it taken today and go ahead and post. I really enjoy the people I work with and here are three of my IT folks. Shot (from left to right) Cindy, (she runs the show) Jack, (a wealth of reference) and Kevin ( Captain Video). They are burning a DVD of a golden apple winner in our school district. It took some work around but they were able to get the footage they needed.
